Tanks & Storage
Ewing Construction has over 20 years’ experience in effecting these repairs and managing construction projects through to tank recertification, including hydro-testing and tank calibration.
Ewing Construction has built tanks since 1989. We have adopted innovative solutions to industry challenges, and this has led to the design and construction of a multiple jacking system that provides safety, small project footprint, and materials control advantages over traditional tank construction methods.
Ewing Construction can offer full hydro testing and API 653 certification.

Call us now +64 3 389 5999Our purpose-build Hydraulic Jacking System enables us to complete the entire tank construction project working from ground level or below heights requiring permits. This eliminates suspended loads, making the process intrinsically safer. Less time and energy is expended accessing the work site and the time spent in confined space entry is reduced to the final strake.
The process requires an exceptionally small working footprint outside of the final tank diameter making building new tanks within existing facilities easier and safer to achieve.
Ewing Construction has successfully fabricated a wide range of tank designs with varying material compositions, from Horizontal Tanks, Vertical Tanks, Internal Floating Roofs and Fixed Truss Roofs, fabricated and tested to API 650. Materials used have ranged through a variety of grades of Carbon Steel, Stainless and Duplex Steels.
As with our tank construction process Ewings utilise their Specialised Hydraulic Jacking System to dismantle storage tanks. The jacks are installed inside the tank and stay there for the duration of the project. 90% of the work is carried out from the inside, which enables this operation to be completed with a very small footprint.
This methods means all works are carried out at ground level thereby reducing the risk of personal injury from falling from heights or being struck by debris from the tank.
Ewing Construction has dismantled over 120 tanks in a fast, efficient and safe process.
Often tanks can be relocated and reused, rather than demolished. Ewing Construction has extensive experience of relocating tanks and we can coordinate the entire process, including road and sea logisitics.
Ewing Construction have fabricated a wide range of tank designs with varying material compositions, from Horizontal Tanks, Vertical Tanks, Tanks with Internal Floating Roofs and others with Fixed Truss Roofs, all of these fabricated and tested to API 650. Materials used have ranged through a variety of grades of Carbon Steel, Stainless Steels and Duplex Steels.
During the life of a storage terminal the requirements are likely to change. Ewing Construction have relocated tanks up to 75m diameter using air bags, hydraulic jacks or cranes to lift the tanks prior to having them transported to their new location. The tanks are moved with either heavy lift trailers, barges, railway systems or simply by load skating them if the distances are small.
Where necessary, we construct the foundations for the tanks to sit on, connect the tanks to existing infrastructure, or we design and build new infrastructure and test and commission the entire system.
Ewing Construction’s in-house engineering team has a wealth of experience with this type of work and has safely and successfully engineered and carried out many tank moving projects over the past 20 years.
Maintenance and Modifications
Ewing Construction has over 20 years’ experience in effecting these repairs and managing construction projects through to tank recertification, including hydro-testing and tank calibration.
Each has its particular challenges and levels of difficulty, from a major floor or roof replacement to minor corrosion repairs. It may be nozzle inserts that are currently not compliant and need upgrading for tank certification, or major shell inserts required to keep a tank in service.
All the repair work carried out by Ewing’s is carried out to relevant standards, typically API653 and certified by third party inspectors prior to handover.
If a tank requires a complete floor replacement it may be more cost effective to lift and move the tank off the base to provide better access. Ewing Construction utilises a range of methods to move tanks to another location while the new floor is laid down before returning it to the base and reconnecting it to the new floor.
Environmental Upgrades
Environmental upgrades are modifications made as a result of changing legislation. These modifications often include the installation of impervious containment liners under tanks.
A variety of methods are used to ensure the most cost-effective process for your upgrade.
